In a life that began in Mobile, Alabama and traveled across the sea to Paris and London, Ward Swingle incorporated music every step of the way. The founder of the Swingle Singers would go on to win 5 Grammy awards with his group’s unique blend of jazz and classical experimentation also incorporated French musicians in their instrumentation.
Ward Swingle studied piano in Cincinatti and later Paris where he worked with a ballet company. It was here that he formed the Swingle Singers with his brother Ira. Though he had retired from the group, Ward had recently moved to the London area to be closer to members of his family when we passed away January 19th at the age of 87.
The Swingle Singers current members have honored Ward in a variety of ways, stating that he will be remembered for his inspirational vocal presence and the mark he left on the world through his music. The modern version of the group is a bit more contemporary than its founders had been, yet remains active in the UK.
